Smart Grid GIS

Smart Grid GIS helps analyze devices and communication paths between Smart Grid devices with regard to their geographical position.

Customer is able to diagnose disorders of communication, and long-term behavior of the network.

Smart Grid GIS enables to detect whether the device cannot communicate because of defects, excessive distance from other points, or whether there is a source of disturbance at a given location, which causes communication problems in larger devices group. 


Basic functions

  • Display devices on the map
  • Viewing communication routes
  • Display devices communication quality- evaluation of the communication quality between "data concentrator and device" or "server and device". Quality can be evaluated according to several criteria. Type of measurement can be set in measurement tab. The available types of measurements: packet transmission success rate recorded hourly, daily, delay in reading 15-min profiles, daily profile.
  • Display long time mean for certain periodic times- calculates the floating average for certain periodic times. This makes it possible to analyze the throughput of communication in different times of day, weekdays, days of rest, etc.
  • Display devices position and quality of communication within the block of flats- position of devices in the house including routes is displayed, as seen on Figure 1.
  • Display position and quality of communication within the apartment, shopping centers, factories ... – images with the plans of apartments, shopping centers or factories and devices and communication routes placed in it. A sample can be seen in Figure 2.
  • Display quality of the connection between two points – packets of throughput between any two points or on any segment of communication route can be displayed, based on support from communication technology used.
  • Searching and filtering - devices can be searched by serial number, address and GPS coordinates. Devices can be filtered by: project, group, type of device (meter, water meter, gas meter), manufacturer, device serial number, firmware version, hardware version, the communication protocol interface (PLC, GPRS) protocol version, country, region, city, street , zip code, floor, subject which has the right to work with device. Filters are intelligent, next selected filter does not show options filtered out by the previous filters. The preview could be seen on Figure 3.

Additional functions

  • Possibility to change the provider of maps - different provider of maps can be added. The list of currently supported: Open Street Map, Google Maps, Google Hybrid Maps, Yahoo, Yahoo Satellite.
  • Auto-complete address information and GPS coordinates - if the GPS coordinates or address are missing in database, data gaps are filled using Geolocation service from Google.
  • Saving a preset point of view - filter settings, maps, current position and zoom, measurement type, date and time can be saved to the file, making it possible to bring the program later in exactly the same point in which it was before saving. File with saved view can also be sent to another person, making it easy to see what you do and it is not necessary to explain how to adjust program to see what he or she need. Views at the problem area can be saved as well, which makes their analysis more convenient and faster.
  • Analysis of route to a single device - after click on a single device, the path to it is showed only to easily analyze this route. The route is shown on the map in a block of flats and apartment too. A sample can be seen at Figure 4.
  • Analysis of routes starting from a single device - after click on a single device, the paths from it is showed only to easily analyze devices and paths affected by this device.
  • Tooltips - move your mouse over a point to display detailed information about the quality of the connection, weight of this value, the number of child devices and other information.

Upcoming features

  • Working offline - data from the central database can be exported to a SQLite database and it is possible to work with them locally. In offline mode, Open Street Map or other maps with the possibility of offline usage can be used. This option is useful for workers orientation in terrain. There are Windows and Linux among currently supported platforms, mobile and handheld platforms support is possible.
  • UAC (User Access Control)- the user will be able to see only some of the devices or groups of devices and will be able limited to certain types of measurements.
  • Support for handhelds and mobile devices
  • Views exact route connection from point to point - based on information about the routes of electrical wiring.
  • Advanced filters- for display device according to the quality of communication, setting a parameter, the number of recorded events with a certain type, etc.
  • Animation of timeline changes
  • Integration with other diagnostic tools


Data are stored in a central database PostgreSQL. Another type of SQL database can be used on request. Data can be exported into SQLite database, which is suitable for terrain works.

Data are sent automatically to database from the data concentrator (Local Control Unit) MT-54A. Automatic data import from reports via various adapters.


The application is designed in a way that it has no limitations in:

  • Types of topology - all types of topologies are supported including mesh or polygonal structure.
  • Number of communication interfaces - the device can have any number of communication interfaces of the same or different type.
  • Time changes - the system allows move, change software and hardware configuration including communication interfaces of the device.
